Subject:  The Perfect Parents

Deuteronomy 5:16 - "Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

We complain about them as kids.  We tolerate them as teenagers.  We begin to need them as young adults and then we become like them as grown-ups.  That's pretty much the cycle for the way we relate to our parents.  In our much later years and even sometimes after they are gone, we soon realize the strength, wisdom and meaning that they passed on to us.

This weekend we celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of our parents.  What a milestone and like many others, I certainly don't have enough time left on my clock to meet such a lofty mark.  However it's in the honoring of our mother and father that we show appreciation to God for them and for the role that they have played in our lives.

We don't honor them because they are always right or because they always gave us what we wanted.  We don't honor them because they supported us and because they were always there for us.  We honor them because of who they are and that they were chosen by God to be our parents.  As a unique and special person, God went shopping for your parents and he chose them especially for you.  In that way, they are perfect.

So today, wherever you are and in whatever way you can, whether your parents or here or passed on, thank God that He omnipotently chose, The Perfect Parents for you.
