Subject: Re-creating God
Romans 1:23 - "And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things."
With presidential election in full swing, this is bound to happen as each candidate jockeys for the top position. But just the other day, in order to support a previous profession of one of the candidates and denigrate another, I heard someone say, "Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a Governor." Without debating the particular merits of that statement, I simply want to point out that we (humans) do that a lot to God. Instead of us becoming and identifying with Him as He is, we make Him like us.
The early church had the same problem as you can see from the scripture above. We often do this so that we have a God that we can "get our hands around." The problem with that is, if we had a God we could get our hands around, He wouldn't be God. See God is bigger than any God that we can re-create and liken to ourselves or to any creature. That's why God so detests making graven images of Him. However we still use means like those above to make Him like us.
Today, don't get it backwards. God's purpose in believers is to make us like Him (Jesus) Romans 8:29. Lets not re-create Him, He's fine as the omnipotent, almighty God who is beyond our comprehension. With that understanding, we can then get to know Him as He is and we will be less inclined to bring him down for our understanding to make Him less than that.
