Subject: The Places You Learn Love
1 Corinthians 13:7-8a "It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails..."
My daughters were gone to Dallas this weekend and the day they departed, I was still at work and I noticed on my messages that I got a phone call from my youngest daughter. She said that she was just calling to say that she loved me. That was the day she left. I have a terrible habit of infrequently checking my phone messages so I noticed the next day that she had left a couple of more messages pretty much saying the same thing. That was Saturday. Then Sunday morning about 6:30 a.m. she called again and she got me on the phone because she knew that I would be up at that time and she once again simply said, "Daddy I love you." I was immediately under conviction about how flippantly I use those words with her, my wife and others that I care about so deeply. Through my daughter, God was showing me something very simple. Love never stops loving.
My daughter probably hasn't noticed that she always has to initiate the affection. She's not concerned about that. She just keeps on loving. She probably hasn't noticed that she says it more to me than I do to her. She just keeps on loving. That's the love that never fails that is talked about in the 1 Corinthians 13 passage.
Today I've learned much from my 8 year-old daughter and I realize that you just never really know the places you can learn love. I endeavor to do better because my daughter has shown me such. Isn't that what Christ did?
