Subject:   Your Reference For That Statement?

2 Timothy 3:16 - "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"

People make all kinds of statements with no factual support for them and sometimes that happens with believers as well.  I was talking with my eldest daughter yesterday.  I think we may have been discussing the fires out west, but at some point she made the statement that, "God showed by the rainbow that He would never end the world again with a flood, but that it would be by fire next time."  As soon as she said it, I thought of that old song we used to sing, entitled, "It's Gonna Rain."  I know that it has a lyric in there like that.  I used to sing it myself, but I've never really seen it worded like that in scripture so I immediately responded to my daughter, "where does it say that in the bible?"  She paused with a slight grin and said, "well it says it somewhere."

The scripture surely has all of the answers but often we base our "doctrines" on what we heard in a "religious" song or even what our pastor said.  We better know what the word of God says because it is the only thing that carries absolute truth.

Today as you go about your daily tasks and make statements about whatever it is you're doing, think to yourself, "what is my reference for that?"  The more you're able to ask yourself that question, the more you will see that much of what we say and do has basis in things other than the God's instructions.  We need to use Him as our reference.
