Subject: All Things Common
Acts 2:44 “And all that believed were together, and had all things common."
Perhaps we’ve gotten away from this style of living, but I was reminded
of how significant the extended family is to the development of children just
last week. The school was sponsoring a parent/student
basketball game for the elementary school and I told my daughter that I would
play. Some of the children played and
some were cheerleaders and still others just showed up to watch. However,
for my part, I showed up and so did my friend Melanie and so did my mom,
my dad and my oldest brother. I call
that generational support.
While the passage above might refer to believers being together and
sharing things, I think it also speaks to having a common goal and purpose. Long gone are the days when if a child was
participating in a sport or dance recital, it was a big deal to everybody. We’ve somehow missed out on the “being
together” part. When we miss out on
those things, then we will surely not “things common.” Perhaps dad is too busy with the job and
doesn’t see that his daughter excels at playing basketball or the piano because
he missed the game or recital.
Likewise the church/body of believers should be similarly focused and to do so, we first need to “be together.” Spend time today with believers. It’s the first step to having all things common.
