Subject: Even "Great" Spouses Make Poor Gods
Deuteronomy 7:9 - "Know therefore that the LORD thy God, He is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;"
I see it quite often with the teenagers at high school. I've had students drop out of school for "the love of their life." A few months later I usually get the news about the end of the relationship and how both students have run into some dead end. That's what happens with teenagers. For adults it's usually worse. They often trudge through many years of marriage still thinking and hoping that one day, the other person will become everything that they had hoped they would be in the beginning. The problem is really one of expectations.
We need to understand that God has made no one to rescue us from this plight of life except Himself. Many women look for that knight in shining armor while the men are looking for the woman who can make all of their dreams come true. Sorry, but it's just not going to happen. As I talked about "church worship" yesterday, today it's about "spouse worship." All of those expectations that you have about your spouse; that your spouse will be the answer, is a form of worship. Your spouse should not be the object of those expectations. God should be.
The problem started with Adam and his relationship with his spouse and it continues today. There is only one God and when we put other things before Him, such as our spouse, we will soon realize, even "great" spouse make poor gods. Worship the One and Only. He is God!
