Subject: What Matters Most
Matthew 25:16-17 “Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money."
Matthew 25:28 "Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.”
I've had quite a few discussions in the last week about the Presidential election which takes place tomorrow. Some of those discussions were with Christians and some were with non-believers. I'm never surprised by what non-believers think about an issue, but believers sometimes leave me wondering how they prioritize life or if in fact they do at all.
My one specific point on this matter is the case of abortion. I know that some Christians support the candidate who is in favor of our society's current provision making this terrible act, legal. And when questioned, as I have queried most of them, the response is usually, "there are other issues," or "I don't think the government should be involved in it." Both, in my opinion, are terrible responses.
While I don't particularly differentiate between Catholic and Protestant believers, I must here. The Catholic church takes a bold stance against its members who support abortion, telling them that they "are not" Catholics for supporting it. The Protestant community for many seems to look at the termination of a life that God has created as something that they don't believe that government should be involved in or worst, that is something to be compared to taxes, racism, poverty and the like. In other words, "you have your view and I have mine." That might work for those other issues and for non-believers, but concerning abortion, that is not a view that Christians should hold.
In the end, it's a matter of what really matters most in life. Is the killing of an unborn child more important than feeding the homeless. Of course it is. The unborn child wishes he/she could be homeless. Is the killing of an unborn child more important than racism. Of course it is. The unborn child never even gets the chance to experience the terrible act of racism because it is superseded by the more horrific act of death.
The only message in today's devotional is for believers not to be duped by the world. The world has tried to convince us that everything is "just another viewpoint." While that might be true on many issues, on the issue of abortion though, there can only be one viewpoint from those who profess God. That is to stand against it. All issues are not created equally and your view on abortion, whatever it is, displays what matters most to you.
I pray that we all have a heart for the unborn and pray that we stop and outlaw this act in our country.
