Subject: Significance
Colossians 3:4 - "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory."
Last week, I was at the health and fitness club. While in the men's locker room, I overheard a conversation. One of the gents was a retired thoracic cardiologist. He was explaining how much the field of medicine had changed since his days. He went on to talk about the good ole days. Finally, he said, "in this field, you're no longer important after you retire." You could almost feel his pain at no longer being at the top of his field or being identified as "the man" concerning his area of expertise.
That kind of reminded me in a sense of professional athletes who just can't seem to leave the sport. You see it time and again where they leave and come back and leave and come back. Of course, not that there's anything particularly wrong with that, but I wonder if deep inside of those athletes is the same yearning that the gentleman in the locker room had? The desire to be important again.
When our significance and importance in life is tied to anything other than Jesus Christ, we will ultimately feel a lacking in our soul. We will never feel as though we measure up or are significant in ourselves because Christ wants to "be our life" and not just "a part of our lives." I love the way the verse above puts it; "When Christ, who is our life..."
What is your significance based on? Is it based on the work that you do at church? How about your job? Does that define who you are? Well if you want to feel significant for eternity, make Christ your life today and your importance will become crystal clear.
