Subject: Like Marines
Philippians 2:4 “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others."
My high school students looked at me with a mix of amazement and confusion as I discussed with them how willing I was to give my life in defense of this country while serving as a United States Marine. One of my really bright students was discussing with me whether or not we should be involved in the war in Iraq. What caused the awe was a statement that I made to one girl when I said, "I would give my life so that you could live yours and experience the simple joy of growing old." At that point, she said, "well I can't argue with that kind of devotion."
The Marines don't have that line in their hymn "first to fight for right and freedom..." for nothing. It is there because that's what they believe and they believe it so much that they are willing to pay the ultimate price to ensure it. That's what this country needs and that's what this world needs; people willing to give their all for others.
That's why God sent you and me as believers; to live a life of sacrifice and service to others. The Marine Corps is a great institution to do that, but so too is the place that you live and work today.
Today as we honor the Marine Corps' 233rd birthday, think of the sacrifice and selflessness they represent and then thank our Lord Jesus Christ that He defined those very acts with His work on the cross.
Happy Birthday Marines and Semper Fidelis!
"Freedom is not free, but the Marine Corps will pay most of your share."
