Subject: Core Values - The Call To Duty
Joshua 1:6 - 9 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I swore unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
Honor, Courage, Commitment. In the Marine Corps, these are referred to as our Core Values. There seems to be no doubt from where such values eminate. These are the values for which men and women have given their lives. These are the values that put sacrifice ahead of personal gain. Yes, these are the values that try the human soul as the fight for right continues in this world. These are "Core Values."
The call to duty requires that we live by a core set of beliefs or core values. When Joshua received his official call to lead the children of Israel, God let him know what was required of him. He continually repeated these requirements as you can see above. "Be strong and very courageous."
Today on the 231st birthday of the Marine Corps, we commit ourselves to our core values and as believers, we should do the same. Honor, Courage and Commitment is not just for Marines. It is how we should peform the duties in Christ to which we all have been called.
Happy Birthday Marines and Semper Fidelis.
