Subject: Because The Last Day Is Coming
2 Peter 3:10 - 11 "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness."
Today marks the final day of school at Willowridge High School in Houston, Texas. Today the school will take extraordinary precautions because oftentimes students prepare to do "great" and terrible things on the final day of school. There could be violence, vandalism or any number of things we'd never thought they would do and nowadays we've come to expect that from people throughout our society as they celebrate team victories and other things with this type of activity. It's kind of crazy when you think about it because the anticipation of these great days should do the opposite for our conduct according to the scriptures. Of course it would be nice if the world lived according to the scriptures wouldn't it be?
The scriptures say that seeing that this "great" day is coming, then our manner (way of living) should be in all holiness and godliness. So why is it not? Perhaps its because we don't look forward to that "great day" that is coming. When we get serious about that future event, it will change the way we live today. The word says that that great and cataclysmic day will come "like a thief in the night." In other words, many won't be expecting that day, but we (believers) should be. And we should be ready for it; so ready for it that we are anticipating it, welcoming it and longing to see it. The alternative is to live for the current moment. If that happens then there is probably little purpose to your conduct and manner of living. However, for believers, our purpose and manner of living is all wrapped up in what God is going to do in the future.
The last day of school is here, but "the last day is coming." Govern yourselves accordingly.
