Subject:  Star Wars

Isaiah 14:13 - "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:"

Okay don't be shocked, but I've never ever seen one of the Star Wars movies.  I don't know what it is, but it simply hasn't ever fascinated me enough to try to watch them.  Who knows, I might like them.  However, I will always be amazed at how people can get so excited about some things.  I think that can be okay up to a point, but waiting in line for days to be at the opening of a movie is a bit much.  I think it begins to get into the realm of idolatry.  Remember, idolatry is anything that you give preeminence over God.  If you're not standing in line waiting for church to open, or if you're not spending hours on your knees waiting to talk to God, which you wouldn't even have to wait, and if you do all of the other things that you are doing and spending no time with God, it's clear, you've created your own Star Wars.

See you've decided that what God has created, the stars, moon, sky and His word, aren't enough for you so you'll put "Star Wars" and other things above those things that He gives us to seek after Him.  You will "exalt your throne above God."

This devotional isn't meant to condemn movie-going or watching movies, although there is much that shouldn't be seen.  However, it is meant to identify that idolatry comes in many forms and we must be aware of that today.  Star Wars is just a movie.  Exalting Star Wars above the stars of God is a sin.  So too is exalting your job, your spouse, your house and your kids above God.  It's not the Return of the Stith that is the issue.  It's the return of the Christ.
