Proverbs 31:1  "The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him."

The Proverbs 31 passage is regarded much like we regard our moms, i.e. we remember the words and what it says, after we've experienced some of the situations that we are told.

It's quite interesting to realize that this whole passage was a prophecy that a son received from his mother.  Theologians believe that the king identified as King Lemuel is King Solomon.  If that is true, the king did not do a very good job of listening to his mother.  Remember King Solomon had many problems with women during his reign.  This passage coming from his mother, told him about all of the things to look for in a wife and also told him how to behave as a king.

Perhaps King Solomon was they way that we are with our moms.  We hear what they're saying now, but the words don't hit us until later.  On Mother's Day or their birthdays or at their funerals or sometimes many years later, we often quote, "...my mother used to say..."  Those words seem to stick with us much later and often after we've experienced the things for which they were preparing us.

The task today is to hear the words of godly mother's today and make them useful.  Like King Solomon, they are ringing out prophecy for our lives.  If we would but heed them now, it would save us a great deal of pain later.

Listen to mom.
