Subject:  Old School Mom; Contemporary World

Proverbs 31:27-28 "She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.  Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

I've entered into quite a few discussions over the years concerning the Proverbs 31 passage that addresses "the virtuous woman."  The discussion usually involves the other person telling me how today's world makes it tough for a woman to display all of the characteristics and traits of the woman in this scriptural passage.  They argue that there is no way that a woman could do all of the things mentioned in that passage and live.  Well, surely the passage describes an extraordinary woman, but I think the key is in the scripture above where it says that she doesn't eat "the bread of idleness."

In the "old school" and I mean really old school, like biblical days, the measure of being a mother/wife was by how well you kept home, raised children and provided for the family.  All of the time in each day was to meet those objectives.  There was no time for television, chatting on Myspace, hour-long phone conversations or window-shopping at the mall.  That is our contemporary world.  As a result, many women find it difficult to be the virtuous woman and keep up with the rest of the world, citing that there aren't enough hours in the day.

Today moms, as we honor you, tell the world goodbye and go back to the old school of mothering.  That's where home takes precedence and all of those other gadgets that the contemporary world offers, are used to support you as you "look well to the ways of your household."  In the end, the only thing that will have mattered to mothers will be as the scripture says above, "children call her blessed and her husband praises her."  You definitely don't need the contemporary world to make that happen.
