Subject:  An Obscure Passage?

Romans 1:26-27 "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

This past Sunday, Presidential Candidate Barack Obama was speaking at a college in Ohio when he made this statement,

"I don't think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state .... If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans."

An obscure passage in Romans?  That makes me want to ask this Senator, what faith are you?   What kind of faith believes that Jesus's Sermon On The Mount condoned sin (same-sex unions)?  What kind of faith sees some parts of God's word as more important than other parts?  What kind of faith decides what should be minimized and what should be "more central" in the bible?  I can only say that it must be a faith that has decided that 2 Timothy 3:16 is not that important for sure.  There it says that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God..."  However if we decide that we want to interpret a passage to favor our opinion in contrast to what God has actually said, we can do so, but we should be clear that it does not then represent God or His way for us.

It is my guess that the "obscure passage" that Senator Obama was referring to is the one listed above.  I also guess that by defining it as obscure means that it need not be heeded or is in some way less significant.  These are just my guesses.  This next statement is not a guess for me.  God's "obscure passages" are right whether we want to acknowledge them or not.  I don't think God created any obscure passages, but He did create people who could be blinded by Satan and who would then use God's word for their own devices.

Barack Obama could be president of this country one day and while that is a lot of power, it still isn't enough power to change God's word to condone sin.  As a fellow coworker of mine always says, "it is what it is" and it is truth all by itself.
