Subject: Loving The Wrong Thing
Matthew 6:19 - 20 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal."
The standing school policy is that no student is to use their cell phones during the instructional day. They may have their phones at school, but they may not be turned on. Seems kind of strange to me but that's the way it is. So yesterday one of my cadets was visibly distraught when I confiscated her cell phone and told her that I would keep it in my possession until today. She was so upset that she began to weep and sob. Of course that amazed me so I began to question her about why she would cry over this electronic device. The Marine in me came out and I was really feeling it and began to explain to her that "people are dying around the world and that many have loved ones who are hospitalized or sick. They have reasons for crying. You madam should not be crying over this piece of stuff." Of course that didn't help her at all and she remained upset.
Someone once said that we should "love people and like things." I think we've got that one kind of backwards in our culture today and things have begun to be the preeminent object of our affection. Whether it is a small electronic device or a car or a house, we love stuff.
Christ was not that way. In fact the bible says the son of man hath no where to lay his head. He was not preoccupied with stuff.
Today think about how you would feel if you lost your watch or if someone stole your car. Would you weep or sob? Today don't love the stuff, love people, otherwise you are loving the wrong thing.
