Subject:  Now That's A Principle

Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

I've been having lots of discussions lately about the meaning of the word "principle."  I've tested my students at school about it and I've been having a blog debate about what it means to be a "person of principle."  This morning I asked my wife what she thought the term meant, but first I gave my view that of what I thought a principle was.  I called it "something that you hold to as a bedrock foundational rule."  I then let her know that when I talk about being a person of principle, it means someone who has some unchanging things in their lives.  She then went on to say that someone could have a principle that says that "they can adjust their views."  So I immediately exclaimed, "then they don't have a solid principle."

I understood what my wife was saying and I understand what the word means, but our problem is that we need to have something solid in our lives, a rule or guide that is unchanging and we do.  We have our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and when we look at the verse above, that's a solid principle.  Regardless of what we think about any situation, regardless of what others tell us to think or do in any situation, we can live out this principle in our lives and the beauty of it is that we don't have to depend on anyone else to do it.

If you desire to be a "person of principle," don't fill your life with ever-shifting and changing principles, establish some that are solid and more than that, eternal.  As a matter of fact, don't look any further, adopt the one above in scripture and more than being a man or woman of principle, you will be a man or woman of God.
