Subject:  Doing The Truth

1 John 1:6 - "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:"

We were in a bible study last week and one of the attendees was asked a question about whether or not he believed that God could change anybody.  The response was an immediate "sure God can change anybody.  He says that right there in the bible."  The response was met with skepticism by others in attendance because they've heard statements to the contrary from this person.

What happened with this person is what happens with so many believers.  We, as believers are pretty good at espousing truths out of God's word, but we're not always as good at living out those truths in our daily lives.

I had another example of this from my wife last night.  She was talking to her hairdresser yesterday about the hairdresser's discovery that her daughter was sexually active.  The hairdresser, a believer, had always believed that giving your daughter contraceptives was an endorsement of the sin of premarital sex.  However, when she was faced with the reality of her daughter's sinful lifestyles, she took her daughter straight to the clinic for birth control pills.  She had a belief or truth, but that belief when faced with the circumstances of life was not deeply rooted and was flippantly tossed aside.

I like the way the scripture above puts it, when it says that if we walk in darkness, we lie and, "do not the truth."  See the truth isn't just something we have, it's something we do.  If you believe, then that you ought to do.

Today don't just know the truth; do the truth.
