Subject: Why Resolve?
James 5:12 - "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."
So it's that time of year again. Time to start making New Year's Resolutions. I looked up the word resolution to see what we're talking about and this is the definition that I think fits best.
Every year we "resolve" to do something in particular; whether it's losing weight, stopping a bad habit or simply being more constructive in any number of ways. Many seem to make this formal expression about what we intend to do. I think it's fine to make that expression sometimes, but often we simply should not just talk about it, but, be about it. I mean if we really want to change something, of which we are in control, like diet, bad habits or otherwise, why not just change it? That reminds me of that series of commercials that finishes with a line that says, "stop talking, do something." In one episode a group of people are in a ski lift or something like that and it gets hung up and they all panic and one guy starts talking about how he learned to "think positive" in these situations and as he rambled on about what to do, one of the guys saw a reset button and pushed it and their problem was solved.
Today you may be on day one or two of your resolution, but the only thing that matters is that you do what you need to do, if you need to talk about it fine, but in the end, just do it.
