Subject: Using Or Being Used
Ephesians 5:15 - 16 "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
Today's technology is amazing. They have devices to do most anything. A friend sent me a picture of a laptop that looked like a ballpoint pen. It created with a light beam, a holographic keyboard and on the other side emitted a video display. Can you imagine that? I have a pocket computer now that serves not only as a phone and computer device to receive emails and surf the web, but also is a remote control for tv's and other electronic components. I was waiting in the emergency room lobby of a hospital a couple of years ago with my niece and though the tv monitor was placed up very high and out of reach, people looked in astonishment as I secretly began to change the channels and the volume on the television.
Technology is and I am quite an advocate for its use. However, it can be overused. When that happens, we go from using technology to "being used" by technology. See I've always believed that the only benefit of technology is to give you more ability or more time to do God's business. We can use technology to reach the masses for Christ or we can use it to work more efficiently at our jobs and henceforth become more productive. We shouldn't use it to continually occupy our lives; like when a dad brings home his Blackberry from work so that he can stay in touch with the office while at home. We also shouldn't use it so that we can spend hours upon hours online chatting or even just surfing the web when it takes away from time with our family and other responsibilities that we have. When we do that, we are not "using" technology, we are "being used" by it. This is not "walking circumspectly or wisely."
Today, redeem the time. Make use of all that God has given you, but make "good" use of it; "for the days are evil."
