Subject: Been To The Mountaintop?
Deuteronomy 32:49 - "Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:"
In the last public sermon of Martin Luther King Jr., he stated that there would be many difficult days ahead and that while longevity had its place, he wasn't concerned about living a long life. He said that he just wanted to do God's will. In his words he said, "it doesn't really matter to me now, because I've been to the mountaintop and He's allowed me to look over into the promised land." He went on to say, "I'm not worried about anything and I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."
Many call his speech that night in Memphis prophetic because he was killed shortly thereafter by an assassin's bullet. The most amazing part about it was his serenity at the threat of having his life cut short. What causes such peace? I think it's the action of having been to the mountaintop with God.
MLK, like Moses way before him, had a relationship with God that allowed them to see how they were being used in God's greater plan. When we can see that, then we are not so much concerned with our end and how it plays out for us. God's plan is great even when we don't see it as great for us.
Today if your life seems all messed up and headed for destruction, perhaps you need a mountaintop experience with God, because once you've been there and He's allowed you to look over into "the promised land," you won't worry about anything or anyone.
Have a great MLK holy day!
