Subject: God's Judgment
Deuteronomy 28:15 - "But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:"
Deuteronomy 28:25 - "The LORD will let your enemies defeat you. You will attack them from one direction but run away from them in seven directions. You will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms in the world."
One conservative talk-show radio host always begins his program by saying, "here in the greatest nation on God's green earth..." Just as I teach my students to respond to sweeping generalizations, I always respond in my mind when I hear that greeting with, "well that depends on what you're talking about." If you're talking about economic prosperity and free enterprise, then perhaps that's true, but if you're talking about moral restraint and control by a society, then I would disagree.
Just this past month was an example of a nation giving in to the world. For years, the United States as a part of the United Nations (UN) had always voted against giving lesbian and gay organizations consultative status. Consultative status is the means by which non-governmental organizations or NGO's have a voice in world matters with the UN. We (U.S.) were always harassed by human rights organizations for our staunch stand against supporting organizations that we thought represented a lifestyle that was counter to morals and good order. However, in December when three European organizations applied for the status, we voted "yes" to allow them in. It was interesting to see how the countries voted on this matter. Muslim countries for the most part all voted against allowing such organizations in, but most all of the "Christian" countries voted yes including our own U.S. of A.
At some point, God begins to judge countries for their waywardness from His commands just as He did with Israel. Could that be happening now? Perhaps. If you read the list of curses that were to fall upon Israel for forsaking God's commandments, it'll really get you wondering.
Today we should pray for our country and that we hearken to the voice of God.
