Subject:  It Was A Super Bowl

Psalms 133:1 - "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

Many people had reasons to be excited about the playing of the 41st Super Bowl.  There was the Black History angle that many were aware of and given that we have Black History month in February each year that was right on time.  Another small sub-plot was the coaching styles of this year's Super Bowl coaches.  While many NFL coaches and college coaches of this era resort to the yelling and screaming style of coaching, both of these coaches were known as calm, instructive and caring types, styles many believe are at odds with a football coaching type of job.  But the reason this year's Super Bowl was indeed "Super," had to be the outspoken, wear-it-on-your-sleeve faith of both Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith.  Having worked together as coaches in the NFL, it was as they were indeed united rather than opponents in this game.

Each year at church during Black History Month we profile an aspect of black people in the world.  Last year it was blacks in the bible.  This year we feature blacks making modern-day history and the first feature this month was of the two Super Bowl coaches.  It was interesting researching them also.  At a website called, www.beyondtheultimate.org, you can see testimonies to the strong faith that both of these men have.

If you read my email message concerning the game, I felt as though the Colts would win simply because it was "their time."  That was reinforced as I listened to Tony Dungy talk about how his faith kept him through the suicide of his son last year and two weeks ago as I listened to the Colts owner say repeatedly that "we have to give all glory to God."  That wasn't normal.  I said after the game, "is their entire organization Christian?"

The game was wet and rainy all night, but as a follower of Jesus Christ, I was moved by what He does with His people.  I can't wait to see the exposure that both of these coaches will get on secular television in the coming days.  Because of the faith of these two men, they made a secular event a "real" Super Bowl.  As for who won the game, I think Jesus did.
