Subject: Facing The Giants
1 Samuel 17:23 -
24 "And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard
them
And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid."
1 Samuel 17:36 - "Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God."
My old church home in Albany, Georgia got into the movie-making business a few years ago. Their latest movie, released last year, was entitled, "Facing The Giants." It told the story of a struggling high school football coach who decided that if he simply lived on principle, then he could take his losing seasons better. Not to spoil the movie for those who may have thought about picking it up on DVD, but in the end, his team ends up in the state championship football game.
The point of the movie, which is a fact of life, is that giants come in many fashions. Not only did the coach face his personal battles, but his wife was struggling to conceive and that caused even more anguish for the coach.
David is famous for the giant he faced, Goliath. He was able to conquer the giant because he had a different perspective than the other men of Israel. When the men of Israel saw Goliath, they were "sore afraid." David wasn't.
David's perspective was different because David had already faced "giants" before and he had to rely on God then, so this was no different.
Today you have a giant standing before you. The beauty of it is that the giant that you are facing today will prepare you for the giant tomorrow. The giant that tells you that you can't win defies the might and power of our living God. "I can't break this addiction." "I'm just a man and men will be men." "I can't help myself." Today these giants all go down in defeat as we go forward in the name of the Lord. We're not just facing the giants, the giants need to know, they're facing us too.
