Subject: Color Is Just A Thing
Galatians 3:26 - 28 "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."
Shani Davis skated to Olympic gold this past weekend. Though it was somewhat downplayed, he became the first black man to ever win an Olympic gold at the Winter games. For cultural reasons and to broaden the minds of all young people I think it's a good thing to point out such significant firsts in our society. I remember one of the Winter games where there was a Jamaican bobsled team. That's almost as improbable as a young six year-old from the south side of Chicago becoming a speed skater.
It's good for a society to embrace all colors and ethnicities. These differences can be used for many positive purposes. While we may point out these racial or ethnic differences for certain purposes, the most significant characteristic we hold as believers is to be called God's people. The passage above says, "there is no longer Jew nor Greek, bond nor free,...male nor female." Obviously these distinctions aren't erased, but they simply become subjugated to a greater distinction, that of being a child of God.
Today think about what is most significant to you. Is your heritage as black, white, yellow or brown most important or is it your spiritual heritage and how you became a child of God? While we all retain our differences, in Christ color is just a thing.
