Subject:  Picking And Choosing My Laws

1 Timothy 1:8 "But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully"

It always amazes me how much high school students think they know.  I think that's probably a pattern that we all follow as we grow up.  We soon believe that we have all knowledge only to find out later that we really didn't have much at all.

I engaged a few of my cadets in a political discussion after school yesterday and they were trying to convince me that we would be a more "enlightened" society if we allowed same-sex marriage. They felt that we should change the laws and allow marriage to be between any two people.   We went back and forth for awhile because I could easily see that they were simply going with "the world" on this issue.  I asked them finally if they thought we really should change the law on this issue and they replied "of course."  So I asked them if it would be okay for a same-sex marriage between a 40 year-old man and a 13 year-old boy and they replied, "no way.  That's against the law."  As I said, they really hadn't thought this thing through, but I think it highlights what we do with the law.  We use it to our convenience.

The scripture says that the law is good if a man use it lawfully.  However we twist the law and pick and choose the parts we want out of it, but the law was made to control the impulses of those who would make their own way.

Today if you are not following Christ, then you need the law to keep your from yourself and any crazy ideas you might have.  For all others, God does the picking and choosing and determines your way.
