This is actually a reprint of the Christmas Day devotional from two years ago. Amazing how things are much the same around the world and in fact seem to have worsened since 2006. Factional fighting still wages in Somalia as Islamic extremists try to take hold of yet another region of the world. Now they've moved into the piracy business interrupting international commerce. Not only does Darfur continue unabated, but Zimbabwe has been added as the next humanitarian crisis in the region and the world. The world appears to be in an economic recession, which of course can be easily explained by common sense and the example set by the bailouts and entitlements in our own country. So to take our mind off of these things, we have sports. You could talk about the BCS and watch one of the 30+ college football games or you could wait on the NFL playoffs which get underway soon. Welcome to "the world." With all of this "clutter" in our lives, is it any wonder that many would simply use this holiday as a pleasant distraction from every day life? Perhaps that's a start, but it's so much more than that.
Christmas isn't just a time for everyone to be in the "spirit." It's a time for us individually to make Christ the center of our lives. When that happens, we find that Christmas is a personal holiday. A day like no other. A day when we should all realize that because of the birth of The Savior, the cares of this world are merely background noise to Christ at center stage. Today I can forget what is going on and what the rest of the world is doing, in my heart it's Christmas. I endeavor to make it Christmas every day.
