Subject: How Do You Honor A Dream?
2 Peter 2:18 - "For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error."
It has been an interesting and historic presidential campaign. As my wife and I watched the Democratic Convention on TV last night, we realized that this historic event was taking place on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech on the Washington Mall. Of course we realized this because we were reminded as the program made a tribute to Dr. King's dream.
Dr. King believed that we should live in a society where people are "judged, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." I asked my wife, "how could you honor what Dr. King stood for without making race an issue?" Then it came to me, the answer was to simply "live it." I believe that bringing up the fact that "I am the first African-American, or Asian-American or any other type of American to accomplish something means that we still have some work to do on realizing the dream. Because what would it mean to live in a society, where we didn't think it strange that a person of any color was achieving something great?
Dr. King wanted the time to come in this country where people were judged based on the type of people they were and not simply because of their ethnic makeup or racial background.
As believers, we may yell from the rooftops that we're honoring what Christ stood for, but those are just words (empty, boastful words) if we aren't living it. Today we honor Christ most when we simply live the life.
