Subject: Gas Like Sin
Romans 6:1 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?"
Recently when I was in Washington D.C., I met up with one of my best friends. I was struck by the new car that he was driving. He was in one of those new hybrid cars. I used to harass him about driving the huge Ford Expedition SUV that he got rid of. In my mind it's as though he repented of his ways. It was amazing to see how many miles to the gallon he could get in this new car. Perhaps we should all repent.
That's kind of how we are with sin. Around the country, gas prices are soaring and people are complaining loudly. However, many of us keep on driving and in many cases, driving our gas-guzzlers. We get to the station and fill-up and keep driving and complaining and praying that the prices will come down. Well like sin, the cost comes down when the desire or demand for the product comes down. With sin we often let it continue thinking that one day it will simply go away, but in reality, we keep paying for it the more we continue in it. Yes like gas, the price of sin gets higher and higher if we keep driving and creating a demand for it.
Today we need alternative sources for fuel. We need to lessen our demand for gas and for sin. Unless we are chemists or scientist with know-how in the fuel industry, we can't do much about the gas, but as believers we can do a lot about the rising cost of sin in our lives. Know that if our repentance comes in the form of a hybrid, God's grace will pay for the rest, but whatever we do, when it comes to sin, we should not continue to drive the way that we are driving.
