Subject:  A Greater Principle

Romans 6:23 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

Don't you sometimes wonder what people mean when they talk about their morals and values? One of the current presidential candidates was quoted this past weekend as saying about his two daughters that, "I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

Of course my first question when I hear that statement is, "what are your values in the first place?"  Without getting into the meaning or any interpretation on what the candidate was trying to say, it appears to me that in cases like this, the values are determined by trying to prevent a particular outcome.  When we attempt to determine outcomes and situations in life, we are living on a "lesser" principle.  However, when we teach a greater principle like the one found in Galatians, we are living on a higher principle.

We simply can't determine outcomes in this life.  We must not be deceived, God is in control and a much greater principle is that outcomes in life are left up to Him.  Our values should come from His principles.

I have two daughters also and I don't particularly want bad things to happen to them in life, but they need to learn early that you will surely reap what you sow.  That's the greater principle.  That's why I punish them now.  When they grow up if they have a baby out of wedlock, it won't be "punishment," it will be the consequences of bad sowing on their part.
