Subject:  Something To Believe In

Romans 8:24-25 "For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?  But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."

Wednesdays are our weekly inspection days for our cadets.  I noticed one cadet who has not worn her uniform for the past three weeks.  I pulled her into the office and began to question her about it.  In a very despondent tone she stated that it was no use to wear her uniform because she didn't care anymore.  As I "peeled the onion" on this matter, this student felt no purpose in life because her grandfather had been diagnosed with cancer and so had her mother.  As soon as she stated this to me, I saw the opening as I realized why she was so hopeless in this situation.  This was one of my two acknowledged atheist students.  She went on to say that she felt so "out of control," and I immediately stated to her that circumstances come about in life to reassure us of the fact that truly much of what happens in life is indeed out of our control.  Because I've had these "life" discussions with her before, I was able to remind her that I was a "God-believer" and that while things may be out of our control, they're not ever outside of His and that is the "hope" for the believer.

The problem with this student and so many others in this world is that they have only themselves to believe in.  Life will not allow anyone to be God.  We can't even put two socks in the dryer and get them both out, so you know we can't control life.  Our only hope is the faith that we have in an Almighty and Omnipotent God.

Today, we have hope as believers and it is that hope that keeps us eternally optimistic.  If you don't have that hope today, you don't just need "something to believe in," you need "Someone" to believe in and His name is Jesus Christ.
